WeCAN Make an Impact Together
On July 1, the South Heartland District Health Department launched WeCAN Move It!, a community-wide movement campaign to log 2.5 million minutes of movement in 6 months. There’s a fun online tracker to enter the time you spend walking, doing Pilates, lifting weights, and even cleaning your house! It’s part of the SHDHD’s larger efforts to address diabetes in its service area.
Why is the YWCA Adams County’s newsletter kicking off with information about another organization?
Because the WeCAN Move It! campaign is a reminder that any movement can have a positive impact in our community. Even the smallest of movements can contribute to a much larger picture than we often dare to imagine!
The YWCA Adams County is determined to make positive impacts in our community. Just as meeting the WeCAN Move It! goal cannot be met by only six or seven people, we are working and finding new ways to work with other in the community.
Flashy social media posts or even pictures aren’t appropriate for sharing our work so here are a few of our contributions from the past year.
We’ve hosted women in diversion and vocational rehabilitation programs.
We opened the Career Closet to women fleeing an abusive relationships, sold freezer meals to families with members recovering from falls, and taught financial literacy to women seeking a new future for their families.
We’ve even help distribute processed venison to other organizations and families.
In none of these cases were we at the YW the only agency working with the clients. Indeed, the YW’s role is considerably smaller than the other agencies in many cases.
But we do play a role, and through your membership, so do you! Thank you.
In upcoming months, we will be reaching out about how you can play an active role in the YWCA Adams County. Perhaps you are interested in board membership. Maybe you’re willing to host a holiday luncheon at your house.* Want to lead a class on handknitting? Let’s get you signed up!
Until then, grab a friend, go for a walk, and log those minutes. That’s so much more fun than logging your time spent cleaning!
Best wishes,
Alicia
